Leading at Every Level

Every professional role brings with it the need for certain management and leadership skills and competencies - yet the specific needs are different for each role in an organization. Our "Leading at Every Level" model is designed to provide faculty and academic leaders with information about the management and leadership expectations as well as available tools and resources for ongoing learning and professional development.

Individual faculty members (whether Administrative and Professional, Instructional, or Research Faculty) have a realm of personal performance needs related to management and leadership competencies.

In addition to managing and leading within the scope of your individual role, you may find yourself leading a project or research team, chairing a committee, or supervising a staff member or graduate students.  This adds an additional layer of needs related to "managing and leading others."

Moving into a role that requires you to lead a function - most often a program or department - brings a new set of management responsibilities and leadership challenges, needs, and expectations.

People in formal academic leadership roles such as assistant or associate department head, department head, program manager, or director - or those faculty members preparing to move into these types of roles - will find information about developing competencies for this level of managing and leading here.

College- or division-level leadership adds yet another layer of management and leadership challenges, needs, and opportunities - leading a number of departments, programs, and functions as well as leading a cadre of other leaders.

People in senior level leadership roles such as assistant or associate dean, assistant or associate vice president, dean, or vice president - or those functional leaders preparing to move into these types of roles - will find information about developing competencies for this level of managing and leading here.
