Leading at Every Level: Department or Program Leader
Department/Program leaders must have the leadership skills and confidence to translate strategy into effective actions, and to inspire collective effort toward share goals. There are are challenges to being a functional leader. Department and Program leaders are expected to handle complex situations and manage the politics of a program or department. It is important for a functional leader to set program and departmental visions, gain buy-in, and align faculty and staff in working toward short and long-term goals.
Two university-sponsored cohort development programs are designed to meet leadership development needs for those at or aspiring to be at this level:
- The Academic Leaders Program, sponsored by the Office for the Executive Vice President and Provost, is offered each fall and is designed to orient and support individuals new to formal leadership roles in academia, or experience leaders new to the university. Nominations are sought for participation each year, in the late spring/early summer.
- Any questions about the program and nominations can be directed to Amy Hogan.
