General ItemPre-Tenure Pandemic Course Relief Program
The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented impacts on pre-tenure faculty. Additional tenure clock extensions have provided faculty with more time but at the cost of delaying their promotion and tenure (P&T). As an investment in faculty scholarship, this program provides up to $5,000 in matching funds to pay for a one-course teaching relief.

Virginia Tech recognizes the financial challenges that faculty members face in publishing their scholarly and creative research. With this in mind, the Provost’s Office, in conjunction with the colleges and University Libraries, is pleased to offer publishing subventions in cases where there is a documented need.

General ItemCOACHE Survey of Faculty Job Satisfaction
The Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) survey asks faculty at colleges and universities nationwide to assess their experiences regarding promotion and tenure, the nature of work, institutional policies and practices, and the climate, culture, and level of collegiality on their campuses. The project aims to provide university administrators with actionable information to improve faculty recruitment and retention efforts.

General ItemFaculty Writing Group Grant Program
A grant program to provide funding to support tenured or continued appointment faculty in their career development. The primary goal of this grant program is to encourage faculty to form collaborative support networks outside of their home departments and colleges, and to encourage research and writing productivity in support of career advancement at Virginia Tech beyond tenure.

General ItemFaculty Writing Retreats
These retreats provide a time and place for faculty to focus on specific productivity goal in an environment of support and accountability and an opportunity to develop a network of peers outside of their departments or colleges. All Virginia Tech faculty (tenured or tenure-track, collegiate, continued appointment or continued appointment track, research, extension, clinical, instructors, adjuncts) are invited to participate.

General ItemNew Faculty Mentoring Grant Program
A grant to support a mentoring project designed to faculty's individual and unique needs. Available to newly appointed clinical assistant professors, assistant professors of practice, collegiate assistant professors, University Libraries continued-appointment track assistant professors, and tenure track assistant professors.

General ItemNational Center for Faculty Development and Diversity
Virginia Tech is now an institutional member of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD). The independent center provides professional development, training, and mentorship opportunities to more than 65,000 members representing colleges and universities in the United States. The center focuses on helping faculty, particularly underrepresented faculty, successfully make the transition from graduate student to professor.

The provost's staff provides support to the university promotion and tenure committee and oversees the process. Promotion and tenure policies for tenured and tenure-track faculty, faculty on the continued appointment track, non-tenure-track instructional faculty and research faculty are spelled out in chapters three, four, five and six respectively of the faculty handbook.
