Support for the recognition of faculty takes many forms, including both internal honorifics and awards and external recognition at the state and national level.

    Academies of Faculty Service and Leadership

    The Academies recognize exemplary contributions of faculty members (all types: instructional, research, administrative, and professional) in formal service roles or in the area of leadership.

    Distinguished Professorships

    The Alumni Distinguished Professorship (ADP), the University Distinguished Professorship (UDP), and the William E. Lavery Professorship are three different ways exceptional faculty members are recognized by the university and the Board of Visitors for their scholarly achievements, contributions, and distinguished careers within each professorship's appointment guidelines.

    Endowed chairs, professorships, and fellowships are established by a donor who provides an endowment to support the salary and/or operating funds of the professor.

    Conferral of the title of emeritus/a is recommended by the president to the Board of Visitors for approval to recognize certain faculty who have given exemplary service to the university.
