Faculty Affairs: Supporting Faculty Success, Empowering Faculty Excellence

The heart and the soul of a university is its faculty. Faculty are the architects of knowledge, scholars at the forefront of cutting-edge research and innovation, pushing the boundaries of human understanding. They are the torchbearers of progress, illuminating the path to discovery and the expansion of human knowledge.

Faculty are also passionate educators and role models for students. They do not just impart information; they kindle the flames of curiosity, encouraging students to question, explore, and create. With dedication and care, faculty use their expertise and mentorship to nurture critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deep appreciation for lifelong learning among students, equipping them with the tools to navigate an ever-evolving world.

At Virginia Tech, the Office of Faculty Affairs is devoted to cultivating a university environment and culture that promotes the excellence, professional success, and personal well-being of all Virginia Tech faculty. To do this, Faculty Affairs supports faculty recruitment, advancement, and retention, including managing critical initiatives like work-life liaisons and the dual career program. We support faculty development with mentoring grants and writing retreats, we manage the promotion and tenure process, and we help foster a culture of faculty recognition.

Faculty Affairs also collaborates with colleges on faculty retention strategies, assists in conflict resolution, promotes diversity and inclusion, and participates in university governance processes. As Virginia Tech advances in its aspirations to become a global top-100 university, Faculty Affairs is here to help faculty thrive in their roles as scholars and educators. Please see our annual report that summarizes some of Faculty Affairs’ accomplishments this past year.

In the grand tapestry that is academia, faculty members are the weavers, crafting a legacy of wisdom and understanding that transcends generations, and they are stewards of positive change, shaping a brighter and more enlightened future for us all. If you are not yet a member of the Virginia Tech faculty, here are my top 10 reasons to join us. If you are a member of our faculty, thank you for all you do!
